Offshore News: Nearing Colombia

Tuesday Evening (2/16)

Radio e-mail update Thuesday at 6:30 pm from Alan:

"Well, were still sailing (duhh). Last night (Monday night) winds steadily built as per the forecast and we reduced sail again and again. By morning we were beam reaching with only the storm jib doing 5 knots or better and the swells had finally organized themselves into regular little mountains with a 10 foot set every few minutes. Everyone is getting plenty of sleep lately and not eating much as our appetites are inversely proportional to the size of the waves.

This afternoon however, the wind settled down a bit and we put up the double reef'd main along with the storm jib to increase our speed. The swells have also died down and everyone is happy for that.

We just now caught up on dirty dishes and had canned sardine sandwiches (go figure) yummy!

We should be within sight of the Colombian coast in the morning with a planned landfall possibly before noon. We are all ready to be back on land and I for one want some pizza and a cold soda!"

EYE crew was less than 30 miles from Cartagena at 10:00pm.

Wednesday Morning (2/17)

At 5:00 am Wednesday the EYE crew was within about 5 miles of the entrance to the harbor at Cartagena. Sunrise is at 6:21 am.

The wind forecast for coastal Cartagena was as follows:

Wednesday 5:00 am
